FSA slams organic food but misses the point

When the British Food Standards Authority issued its report into Organic Food this summer (July 09) it claimed that organic produce was not proved to be nutritionally "better for you" than non organic food. However the report seemed fatally flawed because it does not take into account pesticides or environmental impact of non-organic agriculture.

Organico Marketing Manager Tracy Wright says: "The report did in part mention that organic farming was good for the environment  however it completely ignored important issues such as the pesticide and hormome content of foods. It also ignores some findings regarding positive differences in minerals and vitamins which support claims that organic food can have better nutritional effects."

There are a number of reasons why this report is flawed, firstly the research uses small samples and discounts some of the significant increases in some nutrients found in organic food over non organic. And secondly, the nutritional content of organic food is not it's main "selling point" - lack of pesticides and environmental issues come much higher in the reasoning of consumers.

The good news is that there will be further EU funded research published later this year and it is believed that this will give a more accurate look at the benefits of organic agriculture, produce and it benefit to the environment.
